Mears Garden news- - December 6, 2009

I thought I would periodically throw in an entirely separate post, just about the garden.
This week I thought I would say a few things about new plants in the garden this past garden year. In case you were wondering there are pictures too.

This little gem is a hearty orchid that I had never seen before. It is called Dactylorhi fuschii. It is the Common Marsh Orchid. Like many of these first year flowers the real question will be how will it do this coming spring.

This is an Erythronium americanum, a dog-tooth violet. I also planted the more hybridized variety, which quite frankly was more impressive. I included a picture of it as well. It was the variety called pagoda.

Here are two new orchid cactus. As I have said before my goal in 5 years is to have about as many orchid cactus, but to have many many colors. I actually grew the white one from seed. It took about 5 years.

This is Disporum flavum, also called the Korean fairy Bells. It was very vigorous for a young plant. I will really want to see how it has spread.

This is a martagon lily, called Red Path. Martagon lilies are interesting in that they do not need the sun that the other lilies do. I am going to grow them further and further into the shade over the next few years and we can test their limits.

Finally I have this slightly strange bulb for you. It is called Nectaroscordium Siculum. I got some more this fall.

Looking and trying new plants and flowers is something that should happen all the time.
This is some of what was new in 2009.

Philip
